SAINTS COME BACK - DENY TORNADOS

GAFFNEY, SC:  The Limestone College men’s soccer team (0-0-1) kicked of the 2005 season in good form Saturday afternoon on Saints field.  Limestone stumbled out of the gate, but stormed back to earn a 3-3 draw against the Brevard College Tornados (0-0-1).

After a pair of breakaway goals from Rasim Breznica and Robert Moore, Brevard led 2-0 just eleven minutes into the contest.  The Tornados pushed that lead to 3-0 on a goal from Justin Holstein in the 28th minute.

Limestone began to chip away when David Ash set a cross in front of the net and Tom Beattie’s header found its mark in the 31st minute.

The Saints trailed 3-1 at the break, but played an inspired game in the second half.  Limestone controlled the contest throughout the second half, out shooting Brevard 16-4 in the frame.

Ash found the net out off a rebound in front of the net to pull Limestone to within one in the 65th minute.  With twenty minutes to play, Joel Moran received a cross in front of the net, averted a defender, and scored to tie the game at three.

With thirteen minutes remaining Breznica broke the Limestone defense and got a clean shot, but goalkeeper Ryan Robinson made an outstanding diving save.  Robinson made another outstanding save on a header from Moore on the ensuing corner kick.

For the game, Limestone outshot Brevard 24-12.  A very physical contest, the game featured eight yellow cards and 33 fouls between the two teams.

“We settled down and played our game in the second half,” Head Coach Eric Alsop said.  “The first half showed our inexperience, but we were able to settle down and make some adjustments.  David Ash had a career game (1 goal, 1 assist), and Joel Moran was outstanding on the outside as well.”

The Saints will travel to Mars Hill, NC on August 31, to take on the Mars Hill Lions.  That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
